Btw, forgot to post it afterwards - took my HRM Pro to the shop for warranty claim, it was a faulty piece and the distributor replaced it for a new one. The phone recognises the strap via BT, Garmin Connect does too. The problem arises when I need to synchronise the data. Garmin Connect says connected and starts syncing data, then 5-10 seconds later it says Not Connected. Sometimes the sync doesn't even happen. It just says Connected, and then a few seconds later Not Connected.

I also tried running with the H10 polar strap, and mid-run switched the connection from watch to polar app. Polar app reads it correctly. Garmin won't. I don't have any garmin branded HRM to test, but my understanding was that as long as I use ANT for transmission the manufacture of the strap should not make a difference.
