2) Reset of the Heart Rate strap Sensor and check the connections inside are not bent. Take the battery out and put it in upside down for ~10sec *This seems like it won’t work but has been a popular fix. If you have a new battery, use that to rule out the chance of a low/dead battery. Press and hold the "Light" button for at least 25 seconds. The watch will probably switch off before the 25 seconds. I keep holding the button. Then press and hold…. Same problem for me. Garmin F5 sapphire. I often have days of missing HR data. Other things sync in GC but hr is first to get dropped. I often have red exclamation next to watch Watch is on my left arm, but I have a two handed backhand. I have moved it up an inch. Problem is I never had this issue on the Fenix. And even on the Epix it’s erratic. Eg last week I did a tennis session with an average of 135, and then a few days ago the average was 95, even though I was working just as hard. Optical heart rate measuring is good for daily heart rate tracking and resting heart rate tracking. However, in sport activities including moving or shaking arms, where watch can slide up and down on the wrist or shake and let outer light come to the sensor, optical HR sensors have difficulty keeping the track of light reflected from the blood.
I had similar issue although my the max heart rate was correctly calculated at 170 (220-50) but I also did a ride where it went up to 175 (recorded as the max heart rate for the ride) but the max heart rate did not automatically adjust but stayed at 175.

1. You can set the watch up so it starts capturing heart rate from the chest strap even if you are not recording an activity on the watch. 2. You can update the heart rate graph in connect with the data from the ride so that the daily/weekly training on resting/high heart rate takes into account these externally recorded activities.
